Ghyll scrambling in Stoneycroft Ghyll is based close to Keswick, in the Newlands Valley just outside the village of Braithwaite. You will be sent full details on where to meet when you book. The car park where we will meet for your session is here

Postcodes are not a useful tool for locating the ghyll as they cover too wide an area. Look for 'Braithwaite' and use the map link above if you need a location for planning purposes.

There's no real limit, as we just bring more instructors along if you've got a big group. If you want to book for more than 10 people, just get in touch and we'll set up this up for you.

Ghyll scrambling is a lot more accessible than canyoning as all the obstacles can be missed out if you don't like the look of them. Often gorge scrambling involves scrambling up a mountain river, where as canyoning is usually done in descent.

Canyoning is a lot more 'full on' than gorge scrambling and usually involves the use of ropes to abseil down large waterfalls. The jumps on our canyoning trips are higher and more committing than those found on our gorge scrambles and the obstacles cannot be missed out easily.

There are no jumps in Stoneycroft Ghyll. This ghyll is done in descent is a series of chutes and slides.

To get to the start of the ghyll you need to walk uphill for about 10 minutes. It's then downhill all the way.

You don't need any prior experience.

There is no weight limit but we do have a maximum waist and chest size, as our safety kit will not fit a person larger than this. These sizes follow.

Maximum waist size: 120cm
Maximum chest size: 150cm

We have wetsuit sizes that range from Junior 8 to Adult XXL. You can view these sizes here.

If you have any concerns, please contact us.

A kit list follows. We will provide you with good quality wetsuits, windproof 'cags', buoyancy aids, helmets and harnesses.

You will need:

  • Trainers or walking boots. Running trainers are ideal. Converse style ‘flat’ trainers & ‘water-shoes’ are not suitable.
  • Pair of shorts (these go over the wetsuit). Any type is fine.
  • Base-layer T-shirt (ideally not made of cotton). This goes under your wetsuit. A swimming costume works well as an alternative.
  • Towel or robe (to dry yourself/get changed under afterwards).
  • Dry clothes (to get changed into afterwards).

You will lock your valuables in your car. You car keys will then be locked in your instructor's car.

We take loads of photos and we share them with you for free.

You can bring your Go Pro if you like, but we have to warn you that people losing cameras and Go Pros in the water is extremely common - even when they are properly attached with the approved mounts. This probably happens at least once a week so we'd advise letting our instructors concentrate on the photography while you concentrate on having a great time!

Had an excellent time canyoning with Si! Booked by my partner who is much more adventurous than me but we both had an amazing time. There was one jump I was too scared to do and Si made an adjustment allowing me to continue with the journey in a way I felt comfortable. If you're thinking about booking this but are scared to take the plunge, my advice is go for it!!

We had brilliant fun doing the ghyll scrambling with Si this morning at Stickle Ghyll. We were really well kitted out so soon forgot about the damp, chilly morning and had a fantastic time with lots of laughs and challenges along the way. The kids are already planning for when they can do their next ghyll scrambling adventure!

My husband had an awesome afternoon Ghyll Scrambling in Coniston. Our son bought him a voucher for his birthday and I've never seen him grin so much when he came home wet and exhausted. I would highly recommend
