We will provide all your safety gear and our experienced Rock Climbing Instructors will teach you the basics of rock climbing and ensure that you have a great and rewarding day.

This page is about experiencing a beginner’s rock climb as a half-day adventure experience. We also offer:

  • Rock climbing courses: for those who want to learn the skills to enable them to rock climb on their own. Course for complete beginners to experienced climbers
  • Guided rock climbing: full-day ‘graded’ rock climbing routes in the high mountains

If you want to try rock climbing in the Lake District for the first time, to judge whether it’s a sport for you, or if you just want a fun day out climbing in the beautiful surroundings of the Lake District, rock climbing is a great way to spend your day. We have venues that suit all ages and abilities, from the valley crags to high mountain outcrops and more challenging routes for the more experienced climber.

A harder route on Stickle Barn Crag

Rock climbing is great for groups and is also a great way of tiring out the kids. It works really well as a half-day session, enabling you to create your perfect multi-activity day by marrying this activity up with half a day of abseilingscramblinggorge scrambling (aka. ghyll scrambling) or canyoning.

Rock climbing is also perfect for Hen and Stag parties and is brilliant as part of a team building day for corporate clients.

Rock climbing taster days can also be run from venues the Peak District, Wales (Snowdonia) or Scotland.

A sunny day in the Peak District

Ages and abilities: Rock climbing works for all ages and abilities, from age 8 upwards. We have more friendly walls to drops that will definitely make your legs shake! Under 18s must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

Group sizes and ratios: Generally, we run private, bespoke sessions for just you and your party. At busy times you might be part of a larger group. If you want a private session, then just let us know (there is no extra cost). We put your safety first so the maximum instructor:client ratio that we will work to is 1:8 – if your party is bigger than 8 people then there will be more than one instructor.

Venue: We will choose a venue that suits your aspirations and minimises the travelling that you need to do. In the Lake District we have rock climbing venues in areas like  Coniston and Langdale, as well as further north in the Keswick and Borrowdale areas.

Kit:  We will share a kit list with you when you book, but all you really need are warm and waterproof ‘outdoor’ clothes and footwear. We will provide all safety equipment such as harnesses and helmets, plus buoyancy aids and wetsuits if you are joining us gorge scrambling or canyoning. All our kit is in excellent condition and is replaced regularly.

Times: ½ a day runs from 9am to around 12pm or from 1pm to around 4pm. A full day runs from 9am to 4pm, with a break for some lunch, or to move to the next activity.
