Where is canyoning in Esk Gorge based?
Canyoning in Esk Gorge is based in Eskdale. You will be sent full details on where to meet when you book. A useful postcode for planning purposes is CA19 1TH.
What ages can go canyoning in Esk Gorge?
Anyone aged 18 and above.
How high are the jumps? Are there any abseils?
The biggest jump in Esk Gorge is about 10m but feels a lot bigger! If you don't like jumps, this really isn't the trip for you!
There are no abseils in Esk Gorge - this trip is all about air time!
How fit do I need to be? Do I need experience?
There is a walk of about 45 minutes to get to the start of the canyon. It's mostly flat but there is the odd bit of uphill - you will need to be carrying your kit for the trip (e.g., wetsuit, food, change of clothes). In the canyon you'll be scrambling up waterfalls and up and down the sides to access jumps, so the fitter you are the more fun you'll have.
You don't need any prior experience, but if you think you won't like jumping off cliffs into deep pools then this probably isn't the trip for you!
Are there any size and weight limits?
There is no weight limit but we do have a maximum waist and chest size, as our safety kit will not fit a person larger than this. These sizes follow.
Maximum waist size: 120cm
Maximum chest size: 150cm
We have wetsuit sizes that range from Junior 8 to Adult XXL. You can view these sizes here.
If you have any concerns, please contact us.
What kit will I need?
A kit list follows. We will provide you with good quality wetsuits, windproof 'cags', buoyancy aids and helmets.
You will need:
- Change of underwear & footwear, as you will get wet
- Trainers or boots (Neoprene 'water shoes' are not appropriate, neither are Converse style slip-on trainers or Crocs)
- Shorts to wear over your wetsuit and protect it/your dignity
- Synthetic t-shirt/long sleeved top (e.g., football shirt material) or a swimming costume to go under your wetsuit
- Warm layer/jacket (e.g., a thick fleece)
- Waterproof jacket
- Warm hat
- Rucksack (roughly 40 litres works well)
- Large refuse sack/bin bag
- Lunch and drink
- Hand sanitiser
- Towel
What do I do with my car keys and other valuables while I'm canyoning?
You will lock your valuables in your car. You car keys will then be locked in your instructor's car.
Do you take photos/can I bring my Go Pro?
We take loads of photos and we share them with you for free.
You can bring your Go Pro if you like, but we have to warn you that people losing cameras and Go Pros in the water is extremely common - even when they are properly attached with the approved mounts. This probably happens at least once a week so we'd advise letting our instructors concentrate on the photography while you concentrate on having a great time!
What time are the sessions?
We meet at 10am and finish no later than 4pm. This can sometimes be earlier if your group are quick in the canyon and during the walk in/out.
