… and more jumps!

After meeting in the delightful Eskdale valley, a scenic 45 minutes walk takes us away from civilisation and into the mountains. Scafell and Bowfell tower over us as we get kitted up ready to take on the gorge.

This trip is all about jumps, big jumps into big deep pools. Even the smallest will make you think twice and the highest guarantees at least a couple of seconds of airtime. Add to this some waterfall climbing and you’ve got a trip that will stick in the memory for a long time.

Waterfall climbing in Esk Gorge

Ages and abilities: Canyoning in the Esk is pretty full on, so is only suitable for adults. A good level of fitness is important for this trip as we will be walking for at least 45 minutes carrying kit for the day in a mountainous environment.

Location: We meet in the Eskdale valley at the foot of the Hardknott Pass. Precise details of the meet location will depend on the time of year and will be shared with you when you book. Travelling from the east (e.g. Ambleside, Windermere direction) involves a drive over the Hardknott Pass and Wrynose Pass. These are amazing roads to drive, but are also super steep and narrow with a maximum 33% gradient so require confidence behind the wheel.

Times: This is a full day trip, lasting from around 10am through until around 4pm. Exact finish timings will depend on the size of your group and how quickly you move through the gorge.

Kit:  We will kit you out with a wetsuit, windproof cag and all safety equipment such as harnesses, helmets and buoyancy aids. All our kit is in excellent condition and is replaced regularly. All you need to bring is:

  • Full change of clothes and shoes, as you will get wet
  • Trainers or boots (Neoprene ‘water shoes’ are not appropriate, neither are Converse style slip-on trainers or Crocs)
  • Shorts to wear over your wetsuit – as they help protect our wetsuits and keep our costs low
  • Synthetic layer to go under your wetsuit (e.g. football shirt material, not cotton)
  • Fleece (to wear over your wetsuit in colder months)
  • Spare warm layer or jacket
  • Towel
  • Lunch a drink
  • Rucksack that will fit all of this plus your wetsuit
  • Large black bin-liner

Group sizes and ratios: Generally, we run private, bespoke sessions for just you and your party. At busy times you might be part of a larger group. If you want a private session, then just let us know (there is no extra cost). We put your safety first so the maximum instructor:client ratio that we will work to is 1:8 – if your party is bigger than 8 people then there will be more than one instructor.
